History

The history of the city of Lynnfield goes back some 350 years. It started with farmers, leaving Salem looking for a less crowded area. They were looking for more land to grow their crops and for grazing their animals. However, this land was not easy to obtain. They had to bargain with the native tribe of the Sagamores. Back then, the area where the first white settlers started was divided into Swampscott, Nahant, Saugus, and Lynnfield and was incorporated in Saugus’s town. It was not until 1637 when Samuel Whiting from King’s Lynn arrived that the settlers changed the town name to Lynnfield in the minister’s honor.

Even though the settlers were a mostly agricultural community, they were also known for producing leather, which they manufactured into shoes. The leather and shoes the settlers from Lynnfield did not need for themselves; they used to buy other necessities from surrounding villages.

However, it was not until a Quaker named Ebenezer Breed came to town and transformed Lynnfield to the new world’s shoe center.

Today, Lynnfield is the largest city in Essex County.
